Axel-Springer square

FROM A TRAFFIC AREA TO A CITY SQUARE

As part of the bus transit project in Hamburg, the Axel-Springer square underwent extensive redevelopment. The new road layout allowed for a significant expansion of the surrounding areas, transforming the appearance of Axel-Springer square from a mere traffic area into a square with high-quality public spaces and a distinct identity.

The square is bordered by the Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) of Hohe Bleichen, Passagenviertel, Neuer Wall, as well as the area around the Fleetinsel. The Stadthöfe at Stadthausbrücke in close proximity also open their doors to pedestrians. Axel-Springer square now serves as a strong connecting element in this cluster.

COBBLES AND PERENNIALS

Bright granite surfaces, echoing those found in neighboring areas, and emerging planted cobblestones create a serene framework and contribute to a unified urban landscape. The Axel-Springer tower, together with the existing column form oaks, give the square its distinct character and are reinforced by a calm material composition in furnishings and surfaces. Expansive, steppe-like grasses and perennial plantings sway with unexpected lightness in the wind. The full bloom in spring and summer now brings a touch of nature back to the city center!
