Dammtorstraße (Dammtor street) is a major street in the city centre of Hamburg with significant meaning for both traffic and cityscape. From an urban planning perspective, Dammtorstraße forms an important element as an extension of the "Boulevard" Jungfernstieg. The Hamburg State Opera, located in the middle part of the street, particularly defines the cityscape. The redesign of Dammtorstraße into the "Opernboulevard" primarily results from a reorganization of the traffic area and the enhancement of public space. The reduction of road space allows for a generous design of pedestrian areas. These areas are equipped with high-quality materials and uniform furnishings to give the street a simple and elegant appearance. With the establishment of the Business Improvement District (BID), the former thoroughfare has been transformed into an attractive promenade with a high quality of stay.
